OUR STORY

Bogey Free Club was born from a simple but powerful idea: that getting outside and playing a game could help heal invisible wounds.

In 2014, our co-founder Kristen had the opportunity to work with soldiers at the Fort Campbell Soldier Recovery Unit, introducing them to the adaptive sport of disc golf. What seemed like just tossing frisbees in the woods quickly revealed itself as something deeper—helping injured, ill, and disabled service members reconnect with themselves, with nature, and with one another. The activity soon became a part of the unit’s official recovery program.

Long before that, in 2010, Thomas—now Kristen’s co-founder—was on his own recovery journey. After being medically retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, Thomas faced the physical and emotional challenges of adjusting to life as a disabled veteran. That’s when he discovered disc golf. What began as a casual pastime quickly became a vital part of his healing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. The sport gave him structure, a renewed sense of purpose, and a supportive community during a time when he needed it most.

In 2016, Kristen shared her experience at Fort Campbell with Thomas, and in partnership with the Soldier Recovery Unit(then called the Adaptive Reconditioning Program) launched a nonprofit disc golf tournament on base to expose more soldiers to this life-changing sport. Over 100 participants came out—many of them disabled veterans—proving firsthand that their challenges didn’t define or limit them. That event sparked a movement. Since then, Kristen and Thomas have continued to donate gear and sponsorships to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Campbell, ensuring that injured and recovering soldiers could stay connected to the game. In 2019, they launched the Bogey Free Club brand to expand this mission even further, and by 2023, their passion and persistence led to the official formation of Bogey Free Club as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Since then, we’ve grown in purpose and reach. In 2022, we launched the Save Our Soldiers disc golf tournament—where every veteran and wounded warrior plays for free—and it’s now an annual tradition. We’re also proud founding partners of the Texas Tour, a week-long, multi-city experience filled with adaptive sports, outdoor recreation, and camaraderie designed to empower recovering soldiers.

Our mission is simple: to create opportunities that restore purpose, build community, and promote long-term healing through physical activity and shared experiences. We believe every veteran deserves the tools and support to stay active—and that no one heals alone.
